Transmission Failure? What to Do When Your Car Won't Shift

Immediate Safety Protocol

A transmission failure often results in the car losing all power to the wheels or getting stuck in one gear.

  1. Get to the Shoulder: If the car is still moving, use the momentum to get as far off the road as possible.
  2. Hazard Lights: Turn them on immediately, especially if you have stalled in a live lane.
  3. Do Not Force It: If the gear lever is stuck, do not pull it with force. You could break the shift linkage.
  4. Call for Emergency Help if Needed: If you are stuck in a dangerous intersection or a high-speed lane and cannot move the car, call:
    • 999 for Police
    • 998 for Ambulance
    • 997 for Fire Department (Civil Defence)

Understanding Transmission Issues

Disclaimer: Transmission systems are incredibly complex. Attempting to "unstick" a gearbox without professional tools can lead to thousands of dirhams in additional damage. RoadGuard bears no liability for any DIY attempts.

Common Signs of Failure

  • Slipping Gears: The engine revs up, but the car doesn't accelerate.
  • Delayed Engagement: You shift to 'Drive', but the car takes several seconds to move.
  • Limp Mode: The car's computer locks it in 2nd or 3rd gear to protect the engine.
  • Burning Smell: This often indicates overheating transmission fluid.

Can You Fix It Roadside?

Generally, no. Most transmission issues are due to internal mechanical failure, fluid leaks, or electronic sensor errors. The only safe way to handle this is a flatbed tow to a specialist.

If you are uncertain about your vehicle's transmission or prefer a professional to transport your car safely, click here to request a specialized flatbed tow now.

Important Note for Towing: Some vehicles with automatic transmissions or All-Wheel Drive (AWD) must be towed on a flatbed. Towing them with two wheels on the ground can permanently destroy the transmission.

RoadGuard Specialized Towing We use professional flatbed trucks for all transmission-related calls to ensure your drivetrain is protected during transport to your chosen Abu Dhabi repair shop.
